Chainda community is in Siaya county, Rarieda constituency, in Western Kenya at the shores of lake Victoria. It has a static population of 200,000 and transit population of about 4000-5000 daily. It is a community with a high burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Health care is in-accessible and patients have to walk long distances of about 15-25 miles for the services. Indeed, there is only one dispensary with a nurse serving the community and cannot handle serious diseases. This has led to high maternal and infant mortality. The community of Chianda came together and identified health as a priority and they donated land (title deed available) for construction of the hospital. The abject poverty in the community cannot enable them to construct the hospital hence the need for donor support. Impact Kenya Initiative, registered in the US as a not-for profit organization, 501(c) 3, status is positive and made a decision to help the community have a community hospital as per their strategic plan.
